Nicole De Brabandere

Watercolours

In this series of large-scale watercolour paintings the ground is cut into strips, woven together and 'tailored' to shapes that often reference the body. The woven ground helps activate unexpected interactions between painted contours, the surface topography and the variable fluidity and absorbancy of the watercolour medium. The play of material, gestural and topological dynamics exaggerates the already baroque quality of the painted elements by multiplying the modes and dimensions of form-taking.
